The DC Comics Reboot - BATWING #1

The DC reboot started off with a bang and along with that came plenty of reviews. Batwing originated from Batman Inc., which is a spin off from the return of Bruce Wayne. When Bruce Wayne returned to Gotham City, Dick Grayson was the current Batman and so as the two came together they came up with Batman Inc. where multiple Batmans can guard different countries. Batwing was put in charge of Africa and so once the reboot was thought Dc Comics decided to give Batwing his own series! Judd Winick is writing the story and frankly I think he's doing a good job. He is taking a brand new character and giving him a world for us to explore. The first issue puts us right in the middle of a major problem of Batwing's, which is a fight with MASSACRE! I like how Judd Winick starts the issue out with Batwing explaining who he is and what he is here for just as if Batman is explaining his motifs. Massacre is a perfect villain for the Batman universe because of his motives; here's a direct quote that Massacre says in issue 1, "All I need if for people to die." Their is no explanation for why Massacre wants this to happen just as their is no explanation for why the Joker acts the way he does. Batwing has never encountered a villain like him and so it looks as if he has met his match! The comic doesn't start off slow because you get throw into the middle of an awesome, bloody fight, and then the comic book rewinds to explain the past and what events lead to this point. The art is being done by Ben Oliver and I have to say that it's a new style to me but I like it. In a picture you have three levels of pictures and they are the front, middle, and back; Oliver only focuses on the front or the main point of the picture. The characters in the picture have great detail and awesome shading but the background is very bleak and plain. The detail's of the settings are very boring but Oliver does this on purpose so that we can focus on the main point of the picture. This art takes some getting used to but once you do you get hooked! Overall I like the new series and you can expect me to continue purchasing the monthly releases!
